How the #@(^ do you make career plans when things are changing this fast?
Last week colleagues and supporters of this very newsletter were invited to gather and get our quarterly plans done. 3 months of planning, strategies and tactics. DONE.
I usually love making plans. It’s a part of running a business, but it’s just as helpful if you’re an employee. Planning allows us to reclaim an active role in shaping the future.
But this year, IDK. It feels kinda tempting to avoid planning when the world (especially in the US) seems to be changing so rapidly!
And then I remember what I discuss all the time with my clients: when there is a vacuum, SOMETHING will fill that space.
If you don’t have a plan for the time ahead, the time will pass anyway, and other people’s plans for you will take precedence.
If you don't move with purpose, you can be nudged into a role you never wanted. Or you’ll appear available for projects that aren’t actually good for you.
You know that feeling of being volunteered (or "volun-told") to do something?
If you don’t create and hold on to your vision and goals when things are unpredictable, you’ll end up reacting to the whims of other people, some of whom don’t have your best interest at heart.
So how do you plan in times like these?
You evaluate and reconnect with your values.
You decide what your non-negotiables are.
You take an honest look at what you’re capable of, and where the gaps are.
You keep your longer-term goals in mind, but experiment with new strategies that make sense for your current capabilities.
And then, you connect each of your actions to your biggest intentions.
Sometimes your actions might appear very “official” and impressive from the outside. Some of your decisions might confuse or even seem embarrassing to the onlookers. Sometimes you'll need help.
Since you only get to live one life in this body, just accept the challenges and try things!
During the live call last week, I walked through each guided journal prompt that empowers the professional reflections these personal reflections.
Supporters walked away with a detailed guided journal and weekly planning pages to support their quarterly planning. I'm always looking for ways to spoil the people who support the project!
If you want that guide too, and I haven't already dropped it into your library, you can access it, and every other paid and free downloadable on the Resources page at workingphase.com!

P.S. If you'd like to submit a topic for discussion, just reply to this email or leave a comment on the website. I read every response.
P.P.S. Notice that this newsletter didn't arrive on a Sunday? Honey, I tried, but someone in my household has a different definition of "Go to Sleep" than I do. We're working on it. Send patience. And matcha.
